BUTTERFLIES First year
Speech: English conversation Only English is spoken at school. The children learn English the way
they learn their mother-tongue. Speech is introduced through lots of
songs, role-plays and games. The entire curriculum is in English.
Reading The children are trained to read words instead of letters (ABC).
Letters are taught later. By the end of the school year the children
are able to read short sentences handwritten on the board. Books: Readers 1 & 2, Blank Reader, and English Little Books: ‘I
love’, ‘This is’ and ‘Take it’ – for one year.
Writing Pre-writing is practiced with a special material and equipment. Later the children trace words using stencils to make sentences.
Math Numbers 1 - 100 and addition within 10 are taught during the first
year. Numbers are taught their real quantity-value. Numerals are
also taught during the first year. ‘Comparison’ or ‘classification’
is taught from the first month.
Non academic subjects The children go through lots of activities to develop a practical
intelligence. At the same time they develop physical skills through
hand-eye coordination, sense of touch, etc.
Practical Life – Transferring, building blocks, printing, opening
lids, etc. Arts and Crafts — Coloring, tracing, modeling, flower arrangement,
etc. Puppets, props and free play — The children also enjoy non-directed
activities.
Weekly Blue Curriculum The school provides a note-book called Blue Curriculum that contains
the material that the children will work on during the following
week. It is updated every week, and given to the parents who may
follow the activities going on in the class, and participate at
home. The notebook also contains the teacher’s observations and
comments of the child in the classroom. The Blue Curriculum notebook
must be returned to school every Thursday or Friday for updating.
ELVES Second year
English speech Elves can already speak English. Their speech improves with lots of
attractive materials and methods during the year. Vocabularies are
also introduced for practical life situations with various subjects
using stories, songs, rhymes, etc.
Reading At the beginning of the school year, Elves can already read short
sentences handwritten on the board. They learn to read letters and
phonograms (oy, all, ing, etc.) during the year. They continue
learning reading words and composing sentences. At that appropriate
time, the child learns letters and phonograms very fast. The material for reading comes from various sources: natural
science, practical life, stories, etc., and the children’s books:
English Reader 3 and 4; Yosi book, etc. Elves enjoy their books very much. Books: English Readers 3 & 4, Blank Reader 2, Story-flashcards
books: ‘Can you see me?’ + ‘My baby brother’ — for the whole year.
Math Elves are taught additions within 20 during the year.
They also continue practicing ‘classification’. Book: ‘My math book.’
General knowledge The children learn bits of general knowledge that cover land, sea
and air animals, fruits, vegetables, transportation, professions,
etc. General knowledge is developed through discussions and
attractive equipment.
Writing As the children learn to read letters, they also learn to write
them. Elves practice tracing the alphabet through calligraphy and
with erasable plastic worksheets. They also learn to compose words
as they write letters. The children are taught spelling through
songs. Books: ‘My own writing book’, Mazes 1 & 2, ‘I can write numbers

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Back up at home
Parents are invited to back up RAINBOW’S teachings at home.
This is not compulsory but it gives a real advantage for the child.
Speak English to the child at home!
It is enough that one parent speaks English to the child.
Do not translate!
When speaking English, ONLY speak English and NO other language.
Use gestures or explain yourself in English. Do NOT test the child
by asking questions.
Do not mind your English. Even if you speak broken English, the
child will pick OUR English syntax and pronunciation. Believe our
experience; it will be worse if you don’t speak at all, for other
children are catching fast. The babysitters may also speak the
simple sentences the child learns at school.
Do NOT teach A B C at home
Don’t teach the alphabets to your child and stop anybody at home who
is trying to do that. Learning the alphabets is not a method to
train your child. If you teach ABC to your child, he will have
difficulty to follow his classmates who will read twice faster than
him.
Help the teacher with discipline
Butterfly mothers and babysitters are invited to join the class to
help during the first 3 – 4 weeks.
During that time, they are also requested to help discipline the
child, and let him get used to the new environment. Some simple
things which can be applied, as :
- sitting while eating and drinking
- pay attention to the teacher
- answer the teacher’s questions and greetings
- say ‘thank you’
- don’t run
- no fighting
Encourage your child to get closer with the teacher
Butterfly mothers and babysitters are kindly requested to encourage
the child to interact and play with the teacher. Let the teacher
attend to the child and give drinks, paper, toys, etc. Don’t do it
yourself.
No food, no toys in the Butterfly classrooms
We kindly request parents and babysitters not to give food like
candies or cookies and toys (toy-cars or others) to the children in
the classroom. Butterflies are too young. Toys and food cause the
children to fight among themselves and disturb the class.
Elves may bring toys to show their classmates. Food will be kept
aside for breakfast after class.
Babysitters and mothers have to leave the classroom
After a period of 3 to 4 weeks, Butterfly mothers and babysitters
will be asked to leave the classroom. In the beginning, the parents
and babysitters will be asked to leave the classroom for only 20
minutes. This will be done for several days.
The children always cry for several sessions over days. They are
free to search for their mothers and babysitters within the premises
of the school. Therefore we hope that mothers and babysitters will
leave the school.
Separating the child from his mother or babysitter improves the
child’s social life and the ability to learn. Separation is a must
for every child. We make it progressive and safe.
During separation, mothers often like to have a glimpse of their
children. But children seeing their mothers will cry more, and even
if they have stopped crying. Mothers and babysitters must NOT let
the children see them!
No toy-guns at school
No guns, no blades, no toy-weapons of any kind are allowed at the
school. Do not let the child bring any toy-weapon to the school.
Weapons will be immediately confiscated and perhaps never returned.
Teaching system
Rainbow welcomes the parents who are interested to know about the
teaching system of the school.
The parents may learn about the teaching system but may not change
it. IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM, you may TALK TO THE SUPERVISOR
– NOT the teachers.
The Rainbow teachers teach according to a system they are requested
to follow. They cannot change the teaching system without the
permission from the school.
Therefore the teachers cannot satisfy to the parents’ many requests
and CANNOT make promises. The parents who want to request any change
or make any improvement in the teaching system must approach the
concerned Supervisor:
Miss Dewiwati for all the morning classes.
Mr. Erwin for extra classes.
Miss Dewiwati for all the levels from Koala (SD1) and below.
Mr Erwin for all the levels from Smurf (SD2) and above .
Babysitters to obey the teachers
Babysitters often give troubles when refusing to assist the teacher
in the classroom — like holding the child instead of pushing him
towards the teacher; touching, talking to the child to remind that
she is there, when she should let the child be forgetful of her
presence. It often happens that the babysitter simply gets expelled.
Please, talk to your babysitter before you send her to the school.
Ask the office for proper information
Teachers or any other staff of the school CANNOT speak for Rainbow’s
administration.
If you want to get proper information, ask the office.
Rainbow cannot be responsible for any misunderstanding between
parents and the staff of the school. Any parent spreading rumors or
false information will not be entertained.
